    Responsible Forestry

As one of the largest lumber producers in the United States, Sierra Pacific Windows responsibly manages more than 2.4 million acres of timberland across the West Coast. That’s a big responsibility; one they don’t take lightly. They believe that healthy trees, clean water, and thriving wildlife habitats are a natural result of responsible forest management practices. So naturally their approach to forest stewardship goes further than just chopping a tree, planting a tree.

Sierra Pacific’s sustainable forestry practices are built on balance. As active participants in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, they demonstrate a commitment to meeting (and surpassing!) rigorous sustainability standards set by California, Oregon, and Washington state – the highest standards in the world.

    Forestry
A Partnership With Leading Forestry Professionals

At the core of their forestry model is sustainable yield, which means they harvest only what the land can safely regenerate on its own. With careful planning and guidance from professional foresters and wildlife biologists, Sierra Pacific’s forests continue to grow stronger and more productive over time. Their long‑term vision is expected to triple the volume of wood on their lands over the next century, producing older growth forests and higher‑quality lumber.

    Nothing Goes to Waste

Sustainability also means minimizing waste at every step. From forest to finished product, Sierra Pacific keeps operations in-house. Trees go from forests stewarded by Sierra Pacific straight into their own sawmills, where lumber is carefully milled to the specifications necessary to create beautiful windows and doors. Millwork creates a lot of waste, but keeping operations in-house ensures they can use every part of the tree possible. Shavings are repurposed into animal bedding. Bark becomes landscape material. Remaining fiber is even used to generate energy in their cogeneration facilities – producing over 150 megawatts of electrical power to operate their mills. Any excess energy is sold to local public utility companies in an effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

This Earth Day, we’re proud to work alongside partners like Sierra Pacific who prove that responsible forestry can protect the planet while building a more sustainable future.

    Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are Sierra Pacific windows eco-friendly?

Yes. Sierra Pacific Windows is one of the few window manufacturers that owns and manages its own forests — over 2.4 million acres across California, Oregon, and Washington — under Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification. They practice sustainable yield harvesting, meaning they only cut what their forests can naturally regrow, and reuse nearly all of their milling byproducts on-site. Logs are processed in their own sawmills and milled to the specifications needed for their windows and doors, keeping the entire supply chain in-house and traceable.

  • What is the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)?

SFI is an independent, non-profit certification program that sets standards for responsible forest management in North America. SFI-certified producers are audited on requirements covering reforestation, water quality, wildlife habitat, and worker safety. Sierra Pacific's participation in SFI means their forestry practices are verified by a third party rather than self-reported.

  • Are wood windows more sustainable than vinyl?

When sourced responsibly, yes. Wood is a renewable, biodegradable material with a much lower embodied-carbon footprint than vinyl (PVC), which is petroleum-derived and difficult to recycle. The sustainability advantage depends on the wood being harvested under a credible certification program like SFI or FSC — which is why manufacturers like Sierra Pacific matter.
